I am an artist and designer based in Singapore who is interested in the experimentation of new ideas to reach new boundaries within my creative practice. My practice revolves around the connection between the self and the surrounding environment, as I wonder, how do the things around me affect me? Using multi-media approaches, I hope to be able to convey and derive new perspectives to ideas of who we are, as humans, from the individual to the collective.

Self Help examines the relationship between the self and the outside world, amidst constant surroundings. The self is seen here as a representational subject reactive towards the surrounding environment. It visualises the iterative reactions on the body that are constructed from hidden human emotions like fear and desire, emerging from the notion of competitive driven progress. The setup is a physical manifestation of these emotions, upgraded as methodologies of self-help. It challenges the perception of upgrading oneself in present times, by presenting the absurdity of this mythical “identity”, that is inevitably associated with reflections of the inner self, hidden within an imaginary consciousness.

This performance work It’s Awkward is a playful metaphorical representation of human reactions when faced with problems. In particular, it is a reaction drawn from the artist’s experiences of living during discomforting times such as now. Especially when faced with such calamity, it is only human for us to be uncertain, lost and even despair. And within that amalgam of emotions encapsulates various inconsistencies of working out solutions, working out the discomforting situations. Thus, the artist posed as a subject in this performance, struggling in multiple attempts to interact and be comfortable with strange and awkward locations of a home setting. Above all, this project seeks to embrace and understand the act of human nature and all its necessarily weird and awkward gestural acts as it attempts to find a solution.

The institutionalized state of space, ‘sleep’ is being wrought by ‘humans’ and the ‘society’. The idea of artificiality that exists in the construct of space and light both directly and indirectly affects ‘sleep’. The work materializes the intimate dialogue between the 'society' and 'sleep' within the sociological construct of the rapid urbanization, the conflicting existential phenomenon of infinite industrialization, consumerist attitude and economic hierarchy. Ultimately revealing the common sleep culture that is manifested within the nuance of the compartmentalization of working in tune with time.
